For 10 years, exotica institution the Sounds of Seduction has
been teetering on the edge of Sydney's clubbing scene with barely
contained chaos.
Under the glow of lava lamps or flickering images from the
organisers' cult film collection, dancers gyrate to anything from
oddball soundtrack records to live acts.
The nights are run by eccentric couple Jay Katz (aka Jaimie
Leonarder from SBS's defunct Movie Show) and Miss Death
(wife Aspasia). Recalling countless nights at their first venue,
the Lansdowne Hotel, Aspasia says mayhem always threatened as
500-plus people let loose.
For DJ Leonarder, the venue holds other vivid memories, such as
the night Miss Death almost lived up to her name.
During a record shopping trip the day before, he noticed his
wife bleeding.
"When I said to her, 'Darling, it looks like you're actually
hemorrhaging - you're dying on me here,' she said; 'Hold on, I've
got to finish flicking through this record box!'"
It's this kind of dedication that pushes the pair to
extraordinary lengths to decorate each venue. As well as making
costumes for her troupe of go-go dancers, Aspasia also builds
themed sets that rival those of Cecil B. DeMille.
"She [ended up] in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital," Leonarder
says.
"I was so worried about not having her there [that] at some
point I looked up at the Lansdowne's front door and could see all
this smoke and coloured lights outside. I thought, 'Oh my god, I've
set up the smoke machine and the lights on the street!' "
In fact, it was a footpath vendor's barbecue that had caught on
fire, requiring the fire brigade.
Further pyrotechnics for this weekend's volcanic, 10th
anniversary South Seas theme haven't been mooted. Aspasia says
punters are encouraged to wear "Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts or
animal-skin loincloths".
"You won't see me in a loin cloth," Leonarder says.
Regardless, "everyone will get a lei from Miss Death", Aspasia
says, much to Leonarder's surprise. Realising her blooper, she
chuckles. "You better not print that; it'll turn into a big
gangbang!"
